About Scarlett O’Hatters
The Red Hat Society, a 'play group for women' over 50 who are tired of being invisible, was formed in 1998 in the USA and now has nearly three million members in over 30 countries around the world.
SCARLETT O'HATTERS have seen many new friendships form, and it is heart-warming to see the smiles on everyone's face when we’re ‘out and about’.
We recently celebrated our Third Birthday and look forward
to another year of red hatting.

All Events call for "full regalia" - purple clothes and a red hat. Of course we welcome under 50s too. They wear pink hats and lavender clothing, and 'reduate' when they reach 50.
The Red Hat Society says that there are no rules!
except wearing the proper 'colours'. No meetings, no
fundraising, no minutes! The only other rule we follow is that whenever we are out in public, we act in good taste. It is amazing how people flock to us and ask “what are you all about?”, “you look fantastic” – “tell me about your group”...etc,
and we certainly don't want to leave a bad impression
behind. We currently number 70 with 12-30 usually turning up
for any one Event.

Members are encouraged to organise an Event, and it can be practically anything! (We aspire to croquet on Parliament House lawns and Afternoon Tea at Government House!) We’ve had Japanese, Turkish and Hungarian feasts held in members' homes, where each of 8-10 participants prepared part of the meal, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Since March 2005 we have also enjoyed: Mystery Bus Tour, Film Night, Drysdale Luncheon and Cocktails, Australia’s Biggest Morning Teas,
OZMAS, Theatre Night, White Beach weekend, Mini Golf and Lunch, Melbourne Cup Lunches, Hobart Christmas Pageants (winning two awards!), RHH Research Foundation Big December Breakfasts, a Christmas Brunch at the Royal Palace (my home), Bothwell Country Races, Lunch at Fleurty’s Restaurant at Birch’s Bay, witnessing the Anglican ordination of one of ‘ours’, Afternoon tea at the beach, First Birthday Dinner Cruise, Benini Shoe Parties, Mad Hatters’ Tea Parties, Belly Dancing, Line Dancing and dinner at Parliament House just for starters!
There is also a lunch group that meets at various hotels for a
counter meal on the second Friday of the month and for dinner (bi-monthly), usually
an ethnic restaurant if possible, on the Fourth Friday.
Contact me via email to make a bookings/RSVP for all Events.
· We give ourselves fancy names (‘handles’). This can reflect your name or a hobby, your secret desire or ....whatever! Examples include: Jeannie with the Light Grey Hair, Baroness Barbara, The Pearly Queen, Princess Grace-less, Crown Princess Mary, Dame Irene d’Lite, Baroness Primrose of Primrose Cottage, Polar Sea Rover, Dame Albertina Norma Lee, Kontessa Karen di Klepto...and
so on. Let your imagination run riot. Your
‘handle’ will be added to your name badge, which is supplied
with your membership. Please wear it to all Events.
* RULE: (Even though we try not to have any)
For Events at a commercial venue, when the final numbers
have been reported to the venue and the venue requires
payment for that number, you are required to pay, even if
you do not attend. We have been successful (so
far) at members paying ‘on the day’ rather than having the
hassle of pre-payment, and hope we can continue this
practice as long as ‘no-shows’ pay up. It can not be
expected that the organiser of an Event will be out of
pocket.
Donations toward ongoing expenses are $20 a year per member, payable in January.
All members are required to sign an Indemnity Waiver freeing the Scarlett O’Hatters from danger of litigation. We do carry Public Liability Insurance.
